I'm reviewing fascinating insights now, as Focus 25 - an independent research firm - is delivering to me the results of the extensive recent industry survey on how voice actors use the Internet.

Conducted jointly by VoiceOverXtra and VOICE 2010, the survey's 60+ questions sought to learn how voice actors max the Internet's powers to find jobs, serve clients, train, market and network.

And did we EVER learn! The initial report is 113 pages of charts, data and hundreds upon hundreds of individual comments.

Thank you, thank you, if you were one of the more than 1,000 voice actors to complete the survey. Your time and answers are highly valued.

The results will debut Friday morning, June 4, at the Voice Actors & The Internet panel session at VOICE 2010 - the huge international voice-over conference coming to Los Angeles, June 2-5.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

The survey questions and answers span topics ranging from the use of online marketplaces to effective marketing tools, social media, forums, blogs, training and more.

From the results, we'll see industry data in a variety of categories. But there's more ...

Respondents also reported - anonymously - their annual income, length of time as a voice actor, and whether they work in this field part-time or full time.

By cross-checking answers among multiple questions, we can get a deep window into what's working for voice actors at various levels of income and experience.

HIGH-EARNER HABITS

For instance, what are the Internet habits (social media, blogs, etc.) of voice actors who earn $100,000 or more a year?

Yes, this is info you'll want to know. And you’ll be able to compare your own Internet use and successes with those of survey respondents, to learn additional ways to profit from the Internet.

In late June, VoiceOverXtra will present follow-up reports of the results - including an amazing range of helpful comments from respondents.

THE VOICE 2010 PANEL

The June 4 VOICE 2010 session also feaures a panel of veteran voice actors who will share how they personally use the Internet to enhance their voice-over careers, and answer your questions. The panelists are:
  • Peter K. O'Connell,
  • Trish Basanyi,
  • David Kaplan, and
  • Doug Turkel.

Hi John,
Please know how much I appreciate your work in publishing VoiceOverXtra with all of the continuous stream of invaluable info and the comments from various talent!

Would you please clarify whether the survey results will be made available to all subscribers? It appears from your today's newsletter that you will do so in late June but I just wanted to be sure. For those of us who can't attend the VOICE 2010 conference (but surely would like to!) the survey analysis will be greatly appreciated.

I work hard at marketing, especially thru the Internet, but I'm not experiencing much of a response, although I have picked up some accounts. Yes, I'm doing all those things I hear others are doing, i.e., frequent follow-ups, have a website w/links, stay current with coaching, use twitter/facebook and am listed on several talent sites--but I'm just not getting the work that I feel I should be. I feel that I really am doing all the right things, but I'm just puzzled as to how to significanly increase my actual gig assignments.

I was so hoping to be able to attend this year's conference - and I'm not poor-mouthing here - but at 70, I'm attempting to supplement my Social Security income with VO. Was hoping to learn from the conference "How . . " So, that's why the survey results are important to me.

Again, thanks so much, John!

Thanks for all your hard work with the data collection and interpretation of the survey results, John. This is a topic in which I am most interested, and I'll be in the audience for your session! This promises to be a meaningful and worthwhile practical session because you've not only garnered a great deal of hard data, you've assembled together a friendly and hard-working group of "veteran voice actors!" I'm really looking forward to learning a great deal from your panel! Good luck to you all, and thanks in advance for sharing your valuable insights and tips!
